Weeki Wachee Mermaid Theater to Once Again Feature Clamshell Roof

The Newton Perry Underwater Theatre at Weeki Wachee State Park is undergoing extensive roof renovations that will restore the facility's iconic clamshell roof. Originally built in 1959, the clamshell roof was designed to attract visitors to the underwater theater, but it was replaced in the 1970s with a standard shingle roof.

IKEA Store to Feature Missouri's Largest Solar Roof

IKEA's first Missouri store is set to feature the state's largest solar roof. Consisting of 4,085 solar panels, the facility will be able to generate roughly 1.78 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.

Costliest World Markets for Construction

Switzerland leads a list of the top 10 most expensive construction markets in the world, according to the construction consultancy firm EC Harris. European countries dominate the list. Noticeably absent from the top 10 are the U.S. and countries in the Middle East.

Home Depot to Install Solar Rooftops

Home Depot is partnering with SunAsia Energy to outfit the rooftops of several locations in the Philippines with solar panels. The company's Fairview facility in Quezon City will receive the first solar array, which should produce up to 643,878 kilowatt hours annually.

Australia Stadium's Folding Copper Roof Provides Unique Look

The new copper roof on Australia's Margaret Court Arena helps the stadium stand out among other buildings in the city. "We were looking to make sure Margaret Court had its own identity," said architect Richard Breslin. The folding roof makes the building appear smaller, and it can provide additional shade on the concourse by folding down to the pedestrian level.

Scholarship Applications Now Available

Applications for the 2015 FRSA Educational and Research Foundation Scholarship Program are now available. Candidates can submit an application for Undergraduate or Graduate school, or for vocational or technical training. Application submission deadline is March 31, 2015. The Foundation has given out over $176,000 in scholarships.

Why Retractable Roofs are Less Advantageous for Football Stadiums

Despite their popularity, retractable roofs are less advantageous for most football stadiums. A recent report indicates that through 2012, 66% of games played in NFL stadiums with retractable roofs were played indoors. In addition, retractable roofs cost $25 million to $150 million more than current roofing alternatives.

Carrier Dome Roof Features $1.3 Million Storm Management System

The roof of the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., features a rainwater capture project to reuse hundreds of thousands of gallons of runoff. "We want to use this type of project to help promote sustainable efforts going forward, because at the end of the day sustainable means less costly," said Matt Driscoll, president and CEO of NYS Environmental Facilities Corp.

NRCA University Offers ProForeman Certificate Program

NRCA University's ProForeman Certificate Program allows roofing company employees to earn a certificate by completing a series of training programs and demonstrating their competence to perform work. After completing the program, employees should be able to demonstrate an ability to speak with company personnel and customers about roof systems and job sites, providing rationale for specific roof and safety system choices. They also should be able to articulate aspects of effective crew, company, and customer leadership.

Detroit Begins Revival With Major Construction Projects

The new $650 million stadium for Detroit's professional hockey team and the $140 million M1 streetcar line were among the big construction stories in Detroit last year; however, the city also began other major projects, including a $500 million redevelopment of the Packard Plant, 278 residential units on the riverfront, and a $279 million renovation of the Cobo Center.

Vancouver Convention Centre Boasts Largest Green Roof in Canada

The Vancouver Convention Centre has been at the forefront of eco-friendly design with the installation of a 6-acre green roof, the largest in Canada. The roof includes more than 25 plant species native to the Pacific Northwest. "A green roof shows a real commitment from our team to make the property sustainable and be mindful of the environment that we are in," said Jinny Wu, communications manager for the convention center.

STI Polymer Develops New Roof Adhesive

STI Polymer has created a new roof adhesive for use in EPDM and thermoplastic polyolefin membrane bonding. It is designed as an improvement to a water-based bonding adhesive and should perform more like a solvent.
