Green Roofs Blend Sustainability, Creativity in Buildings

Green roofs provide sustainable benefits for buildings while allowing architects and engineers to incorporate creativity in their designs, writes Katie Marks. Vegetated roofs can help buildings regulate temperature, control storm water runoff and improve air quality, while providing a way for businesses to achieve LEED status or similar environmental certification. This type of roof system can be included in the design of new homes, but an engineer needs to be consulted when installing it on existing structures to assess additional weight, Marks advised.
