ecobee Wins Sole Supplier for Energy Efficiency Programs

Utilities in Florida and New Mexico Select ecobee for Smart Thermostat.ecobee Inc., maker of the first wifi smart thermostat, was selected as the sole smart thermostat for two energy efficiency (EE) and demand response (DR) programs. Customers of Gulf Power and Xcel Energy can receive a free ecobee 3 smart thermostat with a room sensor when they register for the programs.
The new Gulf Power Energy Smart Rate offers a variable-priced rate based on the time of day you use electricity. The program launched mid-February in Florida.
Xcel Energy is launching a residential Smart Thermostat Pilot in its New Mexico service territory that will investigate the benefits that can be achieved by deploying smart thermostat technology.
“ecobee strives to be the best smart thermostat partner for utilities by using open APIs and industry standard protocols making ecobee a seamless part of any DR and EE program,” says Stuart Lombard, President & CEO ecobee. “Intuitive design helps ecobee create positive customer experiences with a product consumers love and our innovative technology gives utilities the data they require to measure and report on DR and EE program metrics.”
ecobee designed an open API for utilities that delivers valuable  metrics for EE and DR programs and EM&V purposes. Industry standard open communication protocols facilitate seamless integration into utilities existing platforms. The ecobee3 smart wifi thermostat uses room sensors, outdoor temperature, occupancy and a number of other data points, resulting in increased comfort and energy savings. In fact, ecobee customers improve the delivery of home heating and cooling by 23 percent.
The ecobee3 smart thermostat is the top-rated thermostat in Best Buy, Apple and Amazon stores, won PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award in 2015, Tom’s Guide Editor’s Choice Award in 2016, as well as an iF product design award in 2016.
The company invests in local renewable energy projects to offset its North American operating footprint. The savings from installing an ecobee for the average homeowner are equivalent to getting rid of all your major home appliances – your fridge, stove, washer, dryer and dishwasher – and still being able to enjoy hot meals and clean clothes. Until now, the idea of comfort and energy conservation have always been at odds. With ecobee, people can now live better while using less, for a healthier planet.
