Green Roof Design Should Consider Maintenance Needs

Image
Green roof designs should take maintenance needs into account with careful plant selection and sustainable plans for irrigation, fertilization and weed control. Plant selection should include hardy local varieties and drought-tolerant plants like Sedum and mosses. Installing a thin-layered waterproof membrane system with synthetic water-retention layers can help prevent weeds and cut down on maintenance requirements. From NRCA Trenton H. Lack of Roof Maintenance During Drought Leads to Problems

Image
Recent rain in the northern section of California's San Luis Obispo County revealed roof problems exacerbated by maintenance lapses during the ongoing drought. "A lot of people when it's not raining -- in a drought like we have been -- they wait till the last minute. So we've had people calling us saying their whole living room is flooded, house is flooded, drips in the kitchen, all kinds of different things," said William Duggins of Mid State Roofing. Solar Companies Reducing "Soft Costs" Through New Designs

Image
With the cost of solar panels falling, reducing the "soft costs" associated with installation is a critical priority for solar companies. New mounting systems could help reduce the time and money needed for rooftop installations. For example, a PV mounting system from QuickMount does away with long rails, which reduces the amount of bolts that must be drilled into roofs. From NRCA Trenton H.
