The Capitol Complex in Pennsylvania is undergoing numerous roof repairs, including $3.5 million in fixes and updates to the roof, skylight and windows on the Matthew J. Ryan Building. Lubbock, Texas, roofing contractors are in high demand because of storms and rain. J.R. Ferguson of J Ferg Pros said an estimated 15,000 homes need new roofs in the area. Construction spending increased 2.2% in April, the highest level since 2008, according to the Commerce Department. The monthly increase was the largest since May 2012 and calculates to annualized construction spending of $1 trillion. Private construction increased 1.8%. Faith Community Church in Greensboro, N.C., now has a rooftop solar system and will purchase solar energy from the nonprofit that owns the panels. The arrangement defies state law, which prohibits anyone other than recognized utility companies from selling electricity. It may serve as a test case to bring clarity to the law. U.S. demand for roofing is forecast to grow 3.9% annually through 2019, hitting a market size of $21.4 billion, a study said. The rebound is due to strong construction activity, according to a Freedonia Group study. The Scribner House, New Albany, Indiana's oldest framed house, will get a $7,000 grant toward a cedar shingle reroofing project. The Piankeshaw Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution owns the home, which was built in 1814, and wants to replace the roof with handcrafted, historically accurate cedar shingles.
