New Department of Transportation Rules

New DOT rules, intended to reduce truck driver fatigue, went into effect July 1. The new rules limit the maximum average workweek for truck drivers to 70 hours (from 82); allow truck drivers who reach the maximum 70 hours to resume work if they rest for 34 consecutive hours, including at least two nights of rest between 1 - 5 am; and require truck drivers to take a 30-minute break during the first eight hours of a shift.
